Workshop: Improving the knowledge of The Caribbean Basin Initiative

Improving the knowledge of The Caribbean Basin Initiative & its Implementation

Willemstad – CINEX In close collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, hosted a workshop to improve the knowledge of government officials and Business Support Organizations of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). This workshop would not have been possible without the cooperation of the US Consulate General and COSME. The event was held on May 18th and May 19th, 2017 at the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort.

The Caribbean Basin Initiative is a collective trade program of the US government and is an important element of the US economic relations with the Caribbean Countries. The CBI is intended to facilitate the development of Caribbean Basin economies by providing beneficiary countries with duty-free access to the U.S. market for most goods.

The workshop was given by Senior Auditor Mr. Alexander Kirk and Attorney Advisor Ms. Elizabeth Grant of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Our government officials and business support organizations received a more in depth view of the technical side of the CBI program. With the information provided they in turn can better assist local businesses that want to make us of the CBI program to export their products to the US more efficiently.

The workshop was opened by the Sector Director of Foreign Economic Cooperation of The Ministry of Economic Development Ms. Vanessa Tore in the presence of the Consul General of The United States of America, Mrs. Margaret Hawthorn. Among the attendees were CDI, CINEX, Customs Officials of Curaçao and Aruba, ADECK, the Chamber of Commerce of Curaçao, the Directorate of Economic Affairs of Aruba, the Freezone Aruba and the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO).

The workshop was a success with valuable information for government officials and exporting companies. MEO is preparing a second workshop for the business sector in which the exporters can get acquainted with the CBI program.

For more information on the use of the CBI program for export to the US market please contact MEO at 462 1444 ext 118 or 141 or CINEX at 462 1444 ext 155. You can also send an email to thyrone.magloire@gobiernu.cw, gersley.gijsbertha@gobierne.cw or Rashida.petronilia@curinvest.com.
